Professional Services

"Professionals tend to seek out other professionals."

This statement seems simple but actually is rather profound.  The most technically advanced builders, contractors, architects, engineers and other professionals actively seek out the companies and/or individuals that they deem worthy to review their work.

Pictured here is Orlo Stitt of Stitt Energy Systems.  Orlo has been building the most energy efficient, technically advanced and green homes in the United States for over 30 years.  His company has won the prestigious "EnergyValue Housing Award®" given by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) 19 times in the 25-year history of these awards.

Hathmore Technologies has tested and HERS* rated many of the homes that Orlo has built over the years, certifying them as either ENERGY STAR, green (sustainable), "zero-energy" or a combination of these.

However, testing the most technologically advanced new homes in the USA is only one aspect of the residential services provided by Hathmore Technologies, LLC.  People and cities in need tend to reach out to the companies and organizations that they feel will help them the most.

Hathmore was the "go-to" company to help the City of Greensburg, KS rebuild the missing residences and small commercial buildings as green (sustainable) as possible after the disastrous tornado struck on  May 4, 2007.

The F-5 tornado was one-mile wide and literally leveled the entire city.

Greensburg is now well on the way to recovery and has a substantial number of green buildings constructed.  The city is more than happy to give visitors a tour of their town and all the significant improvements that they have made.

Now Hathmore is working with several entities to help rebuild the City of Joplin, MO since it, too, was flattened by an F-5 tornado on May 22, 2011.  It is hard to predict where & when disaster will strike but the cities tend to respond by rebuilding as energy-efficient and green as possible.

We applaud their efforts and will continue to work with them.

Military Services

Hathmore has performed air testing and infrared inspections on a large number of military buildings located in the Midwestern USA region.

(All new military buildings are required to undergo air infiltration testing using multi-point testing under specific military protocols that also require infrared (thermal) imaging and documentation.)

Details regarding these buildings are proprietary to the respective military units - armed forces.  However, testimonials regarding Hathmore's work and credentials are available to qualified organizations upon request.

NAHB Green Building Standard PDF Print E-mail

How does a home become certified?

National Green Building Certification assures homeowners and the community that your projects meet the requirements of either the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines or the ICC 700-2008 National Green Building Standard, and truly are green. Builders interested in having their buildings certified should follow the steps outlined below.

Builder Process for Green Building Certification

Step 1: Score the building using the online Green Scoring Tool.
Step 2: Export final Designer's Report from Green Scoring Tool and save locally as an Excel file.
Step 3: Hire an accredited verifier.
If there is not an accredited verifier listed for your area, contact the NAHB Research Center.
Step 4: Forward Designer's Report to selected verifier and schedule rough inspection.
Step 4A: (First Certification Only): If this is the Builder's first certification, the Builder's application packet will be sent once the verifier has scheduled the rough inspection. Before the final inspection, complete the Program Participation Agreement and return to the Research Center with required evidence of insurance.

The Builder's application packet will be sent directly to the builder once the verifier has scheduled the rough inspection and notified the Research Center of the scheduled inspection. The builder should return the following back to the Research Center for processing:

  • the completed application form
  • all pages of the Program Participation Agreement
  • the required evidence of insurance
  • the certification fee for the first building

The certification fee for single-family homes is $200 per building for NAHB members, $500 for non-members. The multi-unit building fee is $200 per building + $20/unit for NAHB members and $500 per building + $20 per unit for non-members. For subsequent homes, builders will be invoiced when the Research Center receives the Notice of Inspection from the verifier.

Only one Agreement is required for each builder regardless of how many buildings are ultimately submitted for certification.

Step 5: Meet with verifier after rough inspection to sign the verification report which will be sent to the Research Center for review.
Step 6: (For 2nd and future certifications): Receive payment notice and remit certification fee. ($200 per building for NAHB members, $500 for non-members, multi-unit building fee is building fee + $20/unit)
Step 7: Schedule final inspection with verifier and sign final Verification Report including certificate information.
Step 8: If the builder application, agreement and insurance is on file and the certification fee has been paid, the Research Center will review the report and issue Certified Green Home certificate.

The chart below details the steps and responsibilities for each involved party in the green building certification process. See a larger version, or download the certification flowchart in PDF format.

How a home becomes certified. Click to see a larger version of this flowchart.

Verifier Role

National Green Building Certification accredited verifiers are critical in the home certification process. Get more information on the verifier process or how to become a verifier.

During the home certification process, the NAHB Research Center will:

  • Review reports and any accompanying verifier comments/documentation
  • Confirm that properly accredited verifier was used by the builder
  • Invoice builder for certification fee upon completion of verifier's rough inspection
  • Confirm builder's Program Participation Agreement, insurance information, and payment history are in order
  • Issue Certified Green Home certificate and forward to builder in accordance with instructions noted and approved on final Verification Report

As green building grows in popularity, so does the scrutiny of green certifications. Make sure your project has the credibility of an accredited third-party certification to back it up.

National Green Building Certification is based on the ICC 700-2008 National Green Building Standard™. There are four green certification levels for homes available in the Standard – Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald. Land Developments can earn One, Two, Three, or Four Stars.

Residential buildings, remodeling/retrofit projects, and developments can be Green Certified to the National Green Building Standard as detailed below.

The green levels and certifications address key green construction areas, including:

  • Lot & Site Development
  • Resource Efficiency
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Water Efficiency
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Homeowner Education

National Green Building Standard establishes design and construction practices for various types of residential projects, including:

  • New single-family homes -- Includes detached single-family homes, townhomes, duplexes, tri-plexes, and quad-plexes
  • New multi-unit residential buildings
  • The residential portion of mixed-use buildings
  • Additions to single-family homes that equal less than 75% of existing square footage
  • Renovations of single-family or multi-unit buildings
  • Renovations plus additions to single-family homes
  • Renovations of pre-1980 residential buildings
  • Renovations that change the use of non-residential buildings into residential uses. Building conversions can be certified using the Green Building Path but not the Green Remodel Path
  • Individual sections or phases of residential or mixed-use developments
  • Entire residential or mixed-use land developments and subdivisions

Certification is available for most types of residential construction or development projects. The following cannot be Green Certified at this time:

  • Additions only (of any size) to existing multi-unit buildings
  • Additions only greater than 75% of the original conditioned area of an existing single-family building that do not involve renovation of the original building
  • Developments that do not contain any residential uses

Dual Certification: National Green Building Standard with Builders Challenge

Renewable Energy - Alternate Energy Options

The cost of renewable energy systems, especially solar electric (Photovoltaic-PV) systems, have been dropping significantly due to a number of factors.  Low-cost, however, is not always a deciding factor in a purchasing decision and the acquisition or leasing of a renewable energy system can involve a significant monetary investment.  Other factors also need to be considered for this type of major investment: Duration and strength of the warranties, financial stability of the manufacturing entity, component quality in the B-O-S (Balance-Of-System) parts/equipment and integrity of the design/installation.

Integration of the renewable energy system into the building's structure is very much a growing trend, as is the use of BIM (Building Information Modeling) to help determine cost of components and energy savings during the design process.  Incorporating a renewable energy system into a new building's design is something that architects and engineers are rapidly learning to do.  However, the design and construction of new buildings has slowed considerably in recent years.

The addition of renewable energy systems into existing buildings can be quite challenging; a challenge that Hathmore is more than adept in dealing with.  Hathmore has won numerous awards and considerable national recognition for innovative work in both sustainable design and renewable energy implementations.  Our 30+ years of experience has allowed us to work with a large variety of buildings and projects, yet we realize that we have only begun to scratch the surface on what needs to be done as we face an unknown energy future together.

3rd Party Inspection, Testing & Verification

Hathmore is a 3rd party inspection, testing and verification company that specializes in high-tech/high-efficiency projects.  One of the services we offer is to provide a 3rd party review of proposals and estimates regarding renewable energy systems and newest generation equipment.  We can give you a second opinion as to whether the Return-On-Investment (ROI) or other financial criteria is justified by the projected energy savings.  We are frequently asked to review alternate energy system proposals since they can come with a hefty price tag.

Collaboration is the Name of the Game

Nearly every renewable energy system installation involves a variety of professional trades that must coordinate and cooperate in order for that project to be a success.  Getting all the team members to understand and work together toward a common goal or set of goals is also critically important since it can be easy for one trade or key individual to take a project off track.

How can this coordination and group focus of the various team members be accomplished?  The answer is the utilization of one or more "Design Charrettes", which facilitate the "Integrated Design Team" approach to any size or type of project.  Design Charrettes have been used for decades by architectural and engineering firms for new, large projects.  However, Design Charrettes can also be used for remodeling or innovative projects just as easily.  The key is understanding how to properly organized and implement them.

This is where Hathmore can offer a unique service that is available to our clients.  Hathmore offers Design Charrettes through DesignCharrette.com.  Since Hathmore does not install any equipment nor represent any manufacturer, our clients can rest assured that we will help locate the best equipment, project design. trade professionals and/or contractors that your project requires to achieve the best outcome.

Examples of Successful Projects and Design Charrettes

We know that you want to review and learn from others who have achieved their renewable energy goals.  We will be listing projects here as we receive permission to make certain aspects of them public.

Please check back here often to see the project listing grow or you can contact us using the black "Contact Info" button at the top center of this web site for our listing of clientèle that we have worked with over our 30 year history.  Thank you.
